Therapy Modalities

Below are some of the common therapy modalities that we use, though this is not all of them.

Our clinicians are versed in a wide range of therapeutic modalities.

We combine our treatment and practical modalities together to create a treatment plan collaboratively with you that is best suited for you, your recovery and one that aligns with your values and beliefs.

All modalities are conducted by qualified and trained professionals

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Skills

What Is CBT?

CBT is a talking therapy that aims to help you change your thinking in order to change your behaviour.

CBT is also been seen to be the most effective in treating those with eating disorders. They have now made an offshoot specifically for eating disorders CBT-E which has been adapted to help those specifically with eating disorders and disordered eating patterns

How Does CBT Work?

CBT works by breaking down your problem into smaller parts so that it is easier for you to make sense of how things are connected to each other and how they affect you. These smaller parts are:

  • A situation – a problem, event or difficult situation

  • Thoughts or cognitions

  • Emotions

  • Physical feelings

  • Actions or behaviours.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills

What is DBT?

DBT is a subset of CBT, but The term "dialectical" comes from the idea that bringing together two opposites in therapy -- acceptance and change -- brings better results than either one alone.

Comprehensive DBT focuses on four ways to enhance life skills:

  • Distress tolerance: Feeling intense emotions like anger without reacting impulsively or using self-injury or substance abuse to dampen distress.

  • Emotion regulation: Recognizing, labelling, and adjusting emotions.

  • Mindfulness: Becoming more aware of self and others and attentive to the present moment.

  • Interpersonal effectiveness: Navigating conflict and interacting assertively.

DBT offers a commonsense, multistage approach:

  • Stage 1: Treats the most self-destructive behaviour, such as engaging in eating disorder and disordered eating behaviours and excessive exercise etc

  • Stage 2: Begins to address quality-of-life skills, such as emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

  • Stage 3: Focuses on improved relationships and self-esteem.

  • Stage 4: Promotes more joy and relationship connection.

Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (ACT) Skills

What Is ACT?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) gets it name from one of its core messages: accept what is out of your personal control, and commit to action that improves and enriches your life.

The aim of ACT is to maximise human potential for a rich, full and meaningful life. ACT (which is pronounced as the word ‘act’, not as the initials) does this by:

  • Teaching you psychological skills to deal with your painful thoughts and feelings effectively – in such a way that they have much less impact and influence over you (these are known as mindfulness skills

  • Help you to clarify what is truly important and meaningful to you – i.e your values – then use that knowledge to guide, inspire and motivate you to change your life for the better.

How Does ACT Work?

By building 6 core processes:

  • Contacting The Present Moment

  • Defusion

  • Acceptance

  • The Observing Self

  • Values

  • Committed action

When you put all these things together, you develop ‘psychological’ flexibility.

Hypnosis

Contrary to what we have seen over the years through the TV Shows, where "hypnosis" has been seen to be a state where someone loses control of their mind and body and have something suggested to them like clucking like a chicken for a large group - That is NOT true hypnosis

What Hypnosis ACTUALLY Is

Hypnosis is about speaking to your subconscious mind, it is a deep state of relaxation and mindfulness

The client is in control of their body, actions and surroundings the whole time

How Does Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis is a deep state of focus and relaxation that’s achieved through hypnosis:

  • Your conscious mind is quieted.

  • You’re able to tap into the part of your brain where your thoughts, beliefs, perceptions, sensations, emotions, memory and behaviours originate.

  • In this state, you’re more open to gentle guidance from your hypnotherapist to help you modify or replace the unconscious thoughts that are driving your current behaviour.

Neural Linguistic Programming (NLP)

What Is NLP?

Neuro-linguistic programming is a way of changing someone’s thoughts and behaviours to help achieve desired outcomes for them.

How Does NLP Work?

NLP tries to detect and modify unconscious biases or limitations of an individual's map of the world. NLP is not hypnotherapy. Instead, it operates through the conscious use of language to bring about changes in someone's thoughts and behaviour.

Meditation

Meditation is the practice of focused concentration, bringing yourself back to the moment over and over again, actually addresses stress, whether positive or negative.

Meditation can also reduce areas of anxiety, chronic pain, depression, heart disease and high blood pressure.

Meditation has been shown to thicken the pre-frontal cortex. This brain centre manages higher-order brain functions, like increased awareness, concentration, and decision making.
